Summary:
This study evaluates the effectiveness of intergroup dialogue programs in Israel, focusing on the interactions between secular and religious Jewish participants. By applying "Contact Theory," the researchers examine whether structured meetings can reduce prejudice and foster mutual understanding in a deeply polarized society. The analysis is based on interviews with participants from various socio-religious backgrounds who took part in a year-long dialogue process. The findings reveal that while initial encounters are often characterized by anxiety and stereotypes, the dialogue process enables participants to discover shared cultural values and human commonalities. The study highlights that the "quality" of contact - specifically creating a safe space for difficult conversations - is more critical than the mere frequency of interaction. However, the researchers also note that systemic social barriers and political tensions continue to challenge the long-term impact of these programs. Ultimately, the article suggests that sustained dialogue is a vital tool for social cohesion, allowing individuals to move beyond binary "us vs. them" narratives. |
